15 for 2015

Met at James' house and ran some loops on a trail near his house. Met up with Jen and logged some more miles. Initially wanted to get 20.15 but my left hip wouldn't allow for it. Maybe be in just out of shape. I can't seem to figure it out. Frustrating.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
6.260.006.26

I have taken some time off to try and get my hip some healing and because I have been a bit lazy, but mostly because my hip has been bugging me on every run. I thought I would run to the church to play some basketball. It is 1 mile away and would give me an idea of how my hip would feel. I got over there in just over 7 min. Felt good to be running again but I noticed the hip pain starting just as I go to the church.

After the game I had some time and decided to run around the hood and see how it felt. The pain started to creep back fairly soon and it was much worse on the uphill than the down/flat. After 5 miles I stopped and stretched and swung my legs out which seemed to help so I threw in another mile.

I am frustrated by the fact that after so much time off, it still hurt pretty quickly. However, I am going to try to stay committed to stretching daily and see if that helps it.

How does it feel at a slower pace? First mile at 7 might not give it time to warm up. Do you ever notice the pain not running or with any other activity?

From Scott on Mon, Mar 09, 2015 at 10:24:58 from 74.95.55.77

The pain still comes at slower paces, but it takes longer to really hurt. I only notice it when I climb stairs, which makes sense that it would hurt more climbing uphill. It was really painful on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, but after stretching it out for a bit it feels much better.

Wanted to see how the hip would feel in some new shoes. After about .25 my hip started acting up but never got any worse really. I had a basketball game to run to that was exactly 3 miles away. It was all downhill so I couldn't keep my pace as slow as I would have liked. Ended up with an average pace of 6:30's.

It felt good other than the little hip niggle. Lungs and other leg parts felt good.

The hip had been feeling decent all week so I decided to try and go a bit further than I have been. I was hopeful that it would hold up well and not be too painful to run through. Big mistake! My hip started aching after about .5 miles. This isn't anything new so I just kept on going. I did an out and back along Wasatch Blvd from my house to Mt. Olympus trailhead and back. It felt about the same from miles 1-5 but then everything fell apart. My hip started having sharp pain and my back started hurting, probably from compensating for my hip. The pain was by far the most intense it has ever been. I guess I should go see a doctor and get it checked out before I make things worse.

I just saw this post...a little late to the party. Sorry it is hurting so bad. Definitely time to use that Obamacare and get it checked out. Just remember, if all else fails Hille can inject you something. He makes very few guarantees though.

From Scott on Fri, Mar 27, 2015 at 09:40:26 from 74.95.55.77

Now I just need to figure out who to go see. Maybe I just ask Hille for a morphine injection before every run and deal with it later.

It has been killing me to watch other people running lately.

From Hille on Wed, Apr 01, 2015 at 10:40:04 from 67.128.146.20

I can guarantee results. I will take away the pain, but I will also take away movement of the leg.

Decided to take 3 full weeks off of running and see if it would help my hip fully recover and allow me to start back slowly building again.

Went out this morning to test out the hip, got about 1 mile out and started having more hip pain, turned around and decided to pull the plug. Got home at 2.2 miles and the pain gradually got worse on the way back.

I guess I will have to go to the doctor and have it looked at to figure it out. I have never had an injury from running before and this has been beyond frustrating for me after working so hard last year to get a solid base. I had hoped to be running a few races this year, but It is looking like a recovery year at this point.

After my visit to the doctor last week, I decided to still take a few days off and just stretch and foam roll my IT band and try to loosen things up.

Went out to test out the leg, felt fine for the first mile. No pain, no feeling like it was going to come. Then at just over a mile a small dull pain in my upper hip which is a different place than it has been hurting. It didn't seem to get any worse over the next .5 miles so I was glad that I could keep going for a bit. The pain seemed to be in my upper glutes this time.

By the time I got back to my house, the pain was starting to get a little more noticeable in the joint so I was glad to be done. The doctor told me to just start running and slowly build mileage and pace. I will try to be very cautious about how it feels. If it is bugging me, I will back off. If there isn't much more improvement over the next couple of weeks, I may go back in for another look at things. After today, I was a little bit encouraged that I could go for a mile with no pain. Hopefully it is a sign of improvement.

Did my foam rolling and hip exercises the last few nights along with quite a bit of core strengthening.

Went out today hopeful that my hip would respond well to everything I have been doing.

Felt fine for the first mile or so, and then a very slight ache in my hip started and never really got worse over the next 2 miles. It started to get a little bit sorer as I got closer to 4 miles. I think that my mind is making this worse because I am more focused on my hip pain than actually running. It sort of takes the enjoyment out of it. I tried to keep my mind off of it and just do little checkpoints on the hip.

Overall, I think it is getting a little better. I will just have to keep working on strengthening and stretching and slowly building the miles. Not totally sure on a timeline at this point.

A guy in my neighborhood is running one of those spartan races and hasn't been very consistent at running. He wanted someone to start running with and I told him I could go out with him. He said he runs about a 12 min mile and is in bad shape for running but has been lifting a lot. I agreed to go out with him and keep it slow, should be good for my hip at least to slowly build back up miles with slower pace.

We did a 4 mile run that almost killed him. We averaged a 10  min mile and then I decided to do 2 more miles afterwards a bit quicker to see how my hip would react. My hip felt pretty decent the entire time. A little achey but not overly painful. Last 2 miles were at closer to 8 min pace.

cross training.

Was given a copy of the Iron Strength workout DVD that was put out by Dr. Metzlr and runners world. Let's just say I am much weaker than I realized. It does a bunch of plyometrics and very low weights for some upper body work. Really gets the legs and abs burning and the heart rate up. I will try this 2 days a week and see if it will help with my hip and running overall.

John - no race plans as of yet. I may throw in a half this fall. I still have hip issues that don't seem to be getting better very quickly. 9 slow miles up LCC. Decided to throw in 1 fastish mile (6:43) on the flatest section of Wasatch Blvd from the La Caille turn to the fire station. Felt good but was loosing my lungs a bit towards the end. I need to start throwing in more of those miles each week to get my speed endurance back up.

Will likely become a regular route now.

Ran the Big Cottonwood course with a friend and his neighbor. Didn't push this run at all and felt good throughout. My shoes are 1/2 size too small so my toes felt a bit crammed with all the downhill. The out and back section along Wasatch is much shorter this year and shouldn't be too much of an issue for a lot of runners. It's no wonder this race is taking precedence over STG this year. Saw lots of police cars, fire engines, and emt crews flying up the canyon. Figured someone had fallen on a hike early this morning. When I got back to my car at Guardsman, they were there working on a guy who had rolled his truck off the road up top.

My neighbor told me he wanted to go at 6:00 AM so we could do a longer run. I got to his house and he tells me he wants to do 10 miles. In my head I thought, this is going to take forever! but I just went along with it and he actually kept a little bit quicker pace for the first 2 miles. During which he explained that he wanted to get faster. I nearly shed a tear because I have been dying running slow with him. Well around mile 3 he just decided to run slow again. No explanation, just about 1 min per mile slower. So I did my usual thing and ran in and out of cul de sacs and added mileage wherever I could or I would run ahead and then back track to find him. In the end I added 2 extra miles in the same time he did his 10. My 12 miles were slower than I care to admit, but 12 miles is still 12 miles. Right?

On a better note, I registered for Boston 2016 when I got back from the run! Hope I make it in.

Warmed up by running 2.25 to the Brighton High track. Then did 8 x 400m. Had a 200m break in between. Was the first track workout for my neighbor and took it pretty easy to stay with him. First one was slow, then we had some decent pace for the middle 6, and then a quick one to finish off the 8th. Felt great to be back on a track. Will start throwing in a few of these here and there to keep some speed work in the rotation. Did .5 at about 8:30 then slowed back to his normal pace of around 10:50. Did 4 of those and progressively got faster during the speed portions and slower during the recovery portions. Tried to explain to him that he needs to push the recovery sections so stay at his normal pace. He was huffing and puffing at the time I told him so he didn't really care .

Was solo today so I decided to try and get a little tempo work in. Ran 2 miles in the neighborhood and then decided I would pick it up for 4 miles at marathon pace. Started to get a crazy bad stomach ache around mile 3, so I had that to deal with for the next 3 miles. Once I finished the 4th fast mile, my stomach felt terrible so I stopped for a second and tried to get rid of the pain. After a minute it started feeling better and continued with my run.

I noticed a couple of things today. Why is it, that when you are running in the dark, cars turn on their brights as they pass you? I was blinded several times this morning. Also, why do people get up so early to smoke weed? I ran through a couple of areas where I could tell someone was out smoking, it was 6:25 or so when I ran through there. Seemed strange.

My neighbor is wanting to run 10 miles 3 times a week until Christmas because his wife will buy him a Garmin Fenix 3 if he hits 500 miles by then. I know he will not make it to the 500 mark by Christmas but it gives me a chance to increase my mileage. The caveat is he runs super slow.

Today I just did a lot of out and backs as he ran the ten mile course we had planned. I ended up with 2.5 miles more than him. He added an extra mile for fun. I decided to run a quick mile on a flatish section of Wasatch (actually had a good chunk of uphill) since my legs were feeling tired. It actually felt better to run faster (6:40).
